The kitchen run by Seva Bharti at the Government Medical College (GMC) in Jammu is now providing a full, nutritious meal for just 10 rupees.
On the auspicious occasion of Baisakhi, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the expanded version of this kitchen. The initiative aims to provide affordable, clean, and nutritious food to the needy people visiting the hospital, so that they do not have to depend on expensive food outside.
This kitchen was started in August 2023, initially providing dal and rice for 10 rupees only during the day. However, in response to the growing need, more facilities have been added.
Now, dal and rice are available for 10 rupees from 12 noon to 2 pm, and dal or vegetable with roti is available from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Significantly, sweets are also served with the food, providing people with a home-like taste and comfort.
The kitchen’s drinking water facilities have also been improved. Four water coolers have been installed, eliminating the need to purchase water.
The seating arrangements have also been significantly improved. While previously only 30 people could sit together, now 90 can comfortably eat.
Many people who have come to the hospital for treatment have praised this facility. They say that getting good, clean food at a low cost is a huge relief, especially when they are in the hospital for many days.
According to Seva Bharati officials, the kitchen’s purpose is not just to provide food, but to serve people. There are plans to expand the facilities in the future as needed.
