Taking a major step towards strengthening road connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, the central government has approved the construction of the Suddhamahadev-Dranga and Singhpora-Vaylu twin tunnels on National Highway 244. The two projects will cost a total of ₹9,779.42 crore.
The construction of these tunnels will ensure uninterrupted all-weather connectivity between Udhampur, Doda, Kishtwar, and Anantnag districts. They will also provide significant relief to residents from frequent road blockages due to snowfall and rain during winter.

Surveys began in 2018
Surveys for this tunnel project began in 2018. At that time, a detailed assessment of vehicular traffic on the route was conducted and the design of the tunnel was prepared. According to a report by the National Highways Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, approximately 9.448 million light and heavy vehicles are expected to travel on this route annually by 2037.

Reduced travel time between Udhampur and Doda
The twin tunnels to be built between Sudhamadev (Udhampur) and Dranga (Doda) will have a total length of 12.85 kilometers. Upon completion, the project will reduce travel time between Udhampur and Doda by approximately one hour.
The Singhpora-Vaylu tunnel will bypass the 12,000-foot-high Sinthan Pass, relieving travelers of the arduous climb and sharp turns. Smooth traffic on this route will be possible even during snowfall.

Total 38.61-kilometer project area
The entire project includes tunnels and approach roads, totaling 38.61 kilometers in length. A two-lane approach road will be constructed to access the tunnels. Upon completion, the obstacles of hilly and treacherous terrain will be largely eliminated.
Strategically and Economically Important Route
National Highway 244 is a vital strategic route connecting Jammu to Kishtwar, Anantnag, and Srinagar. This route is considered essential for both the military and civilians.
Currently, the route is frequently blocked due to heavy rains, landslides, and snowfall, affecting the movement of local people and security forces. Once the tunnel is completed, the route will remain open year-round.
Construction Using State-of-the-Art Technology
These twin tunnels will be constructed using state-of-the-art technology. They will include features such as a special ventilation system, fire safety system, CCTV surveillance, and emergency exits. Wide roads, bridges, and protective walls will also be constructed at both ends of the tunnels.
Tourism and Development to Boost
The completion of the project is expected to give a new impetus to tourism in the Chenab Valley region. It will also increase employment opportunities for local people and improve the region’s economic situation.
Reactions from the Government and Leaders
On the approval of the project, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that these tunnels will strengthen regional connectivity and provide a new impetus to development.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that this project will provide significant relief to the people and make life easier in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir.

After completion, this ambitious project will not only make travel in the mountainous regions of Jammu and Kashmir safer and faster, but will also provide a new impetus to the social and economic development of the entire region.
