A panic gripped the Greater Kailash area of Jammu late Wednesday night when a gunshot suddenly erupted during a wedding ceremony. Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah was also present. The gunshot caused panic among the guests, but Farooq Abdullah remained unharmed.
According to police, a man opened fire with his licensed weapon at a wedding ceremony held in the Gangyal police station area. Police and security personnel present at the scene immediately overpowered the accused and took him into custody.
Police investigation has identified the accused as Kamal Singh Jamwal, son of Ajit Singh Jamwal, a resident of Purani Mandi, Jammu. Police have also recovered the licensed weapon used. During preliminary interrogation, the accused claimed that he had been intending to target Farooq Abdullah for the past 20 years.
Many dignitaries were present at the ceremony at the time of the incident. The sudden firing created panic among those present. However, due to the vigilance of security personnel, a major tragedy was averted.
According to police officials, no terrorist angle has been identified in this case. Preliminary investigations indicate that it is a personal matter. Police are questioning the accused and a detailed investigation is underway.
