DC reviews power supply scenario in Kathua District

Emphasises promotion of Solar Energy, Smart Metering

KATHUA: Deputy Commissioner Kathua, Dr. Rakesh Minhas, today conducted a comprehensive review of the district’s power scenario, focusing on enhancing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy adoption under government schemes.
Assessing the implementation of the PM Surya Ghar- Muft Bijli Yojna (PMSGMBY) in the district, Dr. Minhas underscored the need to prioritize middle-class households with power consumption of up to 3 KW. He highlighted the scheme’s attractive 60% subsidy on solar power units, which significantly reduces dependency on conventional energy sources for a large segment of consumers.

The Deputy Commissioner instructed officials from the Power Development Department (PDD) and J&K Bank to work in tandem to raise awareness about the scheme and simplify access to easy loans for the subscriber’s contribution. He emphasized that widespread adoption of solar power systems would provide a substantial boost to the district’s power infrastructure.

Dr. Minhas directed PDD officials and Block Development Officers (BDOs) to organize awareness camps in their respective areas to educate the public about the benefits of solar energy under PMSGMBY, which is offered at highly subsidized rates. He set an ambitious target of 550 new solar unit installations per month and encouraged government employees to lead by example by registering for the scheme and adopting solar power solutions.

While reviewing the progress of Smart Metering, the Deputy Commissioner urged field functionaries to inform and educate consumers about the advantages of smart meters. He stated that the initiative aims to streamline power distribution, improve billing accuracy, and curb power theft, ultimately ensuring better energy management across the district.

In light of the winter season, Dr. Minhas reviewed the preparedness for maintaining power supply in snowbound areas. He directed the Superintending Engineer, PDD to ensure that adequate logistics and buffer stock of materials are available in areas vulnerable to disruptions caused by inclement weather, particularly snowfall.
